By the time he retired two years ago Captain Nick Bates was qualified to drive any ship, any size, anywhere in the world - except the Union Canal. He had to take an exam before he could begin his voluntary role as a skipper for the Seagull Trust, a charity that provides day trips for people with disabilities and the elderly. During his days as cruise liner Captain when he met people such as the King of Kuwait, Archbishop Tutu, HRH Princess Anne and the celebrities including Sir Jimmy Savile and Patrick Stewart.
